Choosing a Location for your Business
Once you have made the decision to go into business for yourself there will be a lot of other decisions to be made, one of the biggest is where you are going to locate your business. This is an important decision that will have a major impact in the success or failure of your company and should be given serious consideration.
When most people start their own business they usually do it in the city in which they already live, but there are good reasons to consider moving to another city, even another state to start up your business. Some states are just more friendly to businesses than others, some states charge very high taxes while others are very low. There are also factors like subsidies available in certain states and cities that you will want to consider. The cost of doing business can vary from state to state because of different prices for the property that you need or depending on how competitive the labour market is. A strong economy in certain state can help increase your sales but it will also likely increase the cost of rent and labour.
Once you know what city you will want to start your business in you will need to look at what part of town you want to be in. An upscale part of town may give your business a good image but it will also be very expensive. On the other hand a cheaper property may be in an area that your customers won't visit, you need to find a balance here. You will also want to make sure that the area you are considering is zoned for they type of business you want to run. It is important to keep in mind that if you ever want to sell you business location is going to be a factor in determining it's value, the better the area the more the business will be worth.
The next consideration is going to be how difficult is your business to get to, and how accessible do you want your business to be. If you are running a retail business you are going to want to be in a very visible location in a high traffic area. On the other hand if you are working in an office environment you would probably like to be in an area with less traffic. Parking is also going to be an issue, how much is available and how much does it cost, expensive or limited parking will make it difficult for customers to visit your business.
The ease with which you and your employees can get to work is also going to be a factor do consider, if your business is out in the middle of nowhere you may have a hard time attracting employees. This is especially true if you aren't on a bus route. This will also be a factor for you, it will be frustrating to run your business if it is difficult to get to. You will also want to think about your location relative to companies that your company does business with, the closer they are together the easier this is going to be.
